About SAO The State Auditor is one of five constitutional officers in Vermont. The Office provides an independent and objective assessment of Vermont's governmental operations. It is the job of the State Auditor to protect the citizen's of the State against governmental fraud, waste and abuse, and to maximize the value of every taxpayer dollar by shaping an efficient, reliable and responsive State Government for all Vermonters. Citizens deserve someone in government that is watching that their tax dollars are being properly spent.
We at the State Auditor's Office fulfill our duties through two primary tools: audits and reviews. We conduct an annual financial audit of the State's financial statements, ensuring the integrity of the information provided by State government. We additionally perform an annual audit of all federal money passing through State coffers as required by the U.S. Congress. An integral part of all our work involves reviews of the State's internal controls and compliance regarding the expenditure of state and federal funds. This includes the Auditor's Office monitoring financial and accounting procedures as well as overall program effectiveness.
The Auditor's Office is always interested to hear from either our State employees or the general public suggesting ways in which our taxpayer money could be saved or reporting suspected fraud, waste and abuse in Government. Often the stimulus for special audit reviews comes from a letter or telephone call asking us to look into something that has been troubling them.
We ask you not to hesitate to contact us with your concerns, thoughts or suggestions. We cannot always guarantee that we will begin an indepth investigation but we will always check out the complaint or suggestion as required. The office is located at 132 State St. in Montpelier. From I-89, take Exit 8. At the second stoplight, turn left onto Bailey Avenue. At the next stoplight, turn right onto State Street. The office is a yellow Victorian building on the righthand side of the street.
