Mission Statement
The mission of the Auditor’s Office is to hold State government accountable by evaluating whether taxpayer funds are being used effectively and identifying strategies to eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse.
The State Auditor
The State Auditor is a constitutional officer, elected biennially by the citizens of Vermont. The Auditor’s principal duties are generally defined by 32 VSA §163, 167, and 168. These duties include the following:
- performance audits executed in accordance with generally accepted government auditing standards promulgated by the U.S. Government Accountability Office (The Yellow Book);
- the annual audit of the State’s financial statements, commonly known as the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR);
- the annual Federal Single Audit, which requires state, local government, and nonprofit entities expending over $750,000 of federal assistance in a year to be audited in accordance with government auditing standards and the OBM Uniform Guidance;
- audits or reviews that are statutorily required by the Legislature, such as the law requiring all tax increment financing districts to be audited (24 V.S.A. 5404a(l)).
Our Professional Standards Manual sets the tone for our organization and provides the requirements for how we perform our work (except for the ACFR and Single Audit, which are performed by contractors).
Where We Are
The office is located at 132 State St. in Montpelier. From I-89, take Exit 8. At the second stoplight, turn left onto Bailey Avenue. At the next stoplight, turn right onto State Street. The office is a yellow Victorian building on the righthand side of the street.
